One thousand four hundred and forty minutes in a day….every day! So many minutes, yet so little time! This is often how we feel when we lay our weary heads on our pillows at night to catch our 360-480 minutes of rest before we start our new 1,440 minute day. Statistics say we spend approximately 650 minutes each day sleeping, eating and grooming, and approximately 480 minutes working and/or educating. This leaves approximately 310 minutes per day for computing, entertaining, socializing and, hopefully, grinning and laughing. And then it’s off to bed for tossing, turning, snoring and dreaming. So many minutes, yet so little time!
It is a happy woman who is doing what she loves and loves what she’s doing in all those spent minutes, fulfilling her purposes, her goals and her dreams. Even when the hours are out of balance in a day, when the resting is overshadowed by the working and doing, there is a sense of joy that comes from realized purpose. However, sometimes we are so busy in our doing that we miss our purpose for being.
The message is clear from Genesis to Revelations—God created mankind with much more in mind than providing a caretaker for His garden. We were created for Him to lavish His abundant love on us in an intimate relationship. Made in His image, our desire for loving relationships in our lives reflects His desire for loving relationships, and He has chosen us. Our purpose for being is not the roles we enjoy as wife, mother and mentor. No, God has given us breath today for intimacy with Him, and everything else, while worthy and fulfilling, is secondary.
So, how many of our 1,440 minutes today will we give to our most important relationship, where He expresses His love through His written Word and through the thoughts placed in our hearts, and where we intimately express our love, thanksgiving and worship. The God of all creation is waiting on us, “…the Lord must wait for you to come to Him so He can show you His love and compassion.” (Isaiah 30:18)
